What’s probably happening is that she has a staghorn calculus: a stone that takes up all the space in her kidney. Possible complications will depend on the type of treatment you have and the size and position of your stones.A client reports she’s about to lose a kidney due to a kidney stone. Your surgeon should explain these to you before you have the procedure. Complications of treatmentĬomplications can occur after the treatment of large kidney stones. PCNL is always carried out under general anaesthetic. The stone is either pulled out or broken into smaller pieces using a laser or pneumatic energy. PCNL involves using a thin telescopic instrument called a nephroscope.Ī small cut (incision) is made in your back and the nephroscope is passed through it and into your kidney. Ureteroscopy is carried out under general anaesthetic, where you're asleep. The surgeon may either try to gently remove the stone using another instrument, or they may use laser energy to break it up into small pieces so it can be passed naturally in your urine. It's then passed up into your ureter, which connects your bladder to your kidney. Ureteroscopy involves passing a long, thin telescope called a ureteroscope through the tube urine passes through on its way out of the body (the urethra) and into your bladder. You may need more than 1 session of SWL to successfully treat your kidney stones. SWL can be an uncomfortable form of treatment, so it's usually carried out after giving painkilling medication. Ultrasound shock waves are then sent to the stone from a machine to break it into smaller pieces so it can be passed in your urine. SWL involves using ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) to pinpoint where a kidney stone is. Your type of surgery will depend on the size and location of your stones. The main types of surgery for removing kidney stones are: If your kidney stones are too big to be passed naturally, they're usually removed by surgery. If your kidney stones are causing severe pain, your GP may send you to hospital for tests and treatment. You may be advised to continue drinking this much fluid to prevent new stones forming. If your pee is dark, it means you're not drinking enough. drink water, but drinks like tea and coffee also count. You might be advised to drink up to 3 litres (5.2 pints) of fluid throughout the day, every day, until the stones have cleared. alpha-blockers (medicines to help stones pass).drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day.To ease your symptoms, a GP might also recommend: ![]() Small kidney stones may cause pain until you pass them, which usually takes 1 or 2 days.Ī GP may recommend a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ( NSAIDs) to help with pain. We recommend looking for a long-term pattern of AI use, as opposed to a single instance, in order to determine whether the student is using AI. See if there is a history of AI-generated text in the student's work. For example, if the editor they used to write the text has an edit history (such as Google Docs), and it was typed out with several edits over a reasonable period of time, it is likely the student work is authentic. Ask the student if they can produce artifacts of their writing process, whether it is drafts, revision histories, or brainstorming notes.Check out our list of several recommendations on types of assignments that are difficult to solve with AI. Ask students to demonstrate their understanding in a controlled environment, whether that is through an in-person assessment, or through an editor that can track their edit history.Nonetheless, we recommend that educators can do the following when they get a positive detection: There always exist edge cases with both instances where AI is classified as human, and human is classified as AI. Set expectations for your students that you will be checking the work through an AI detector like GPTZero, to deter misuse of AI.įirstly, at GPTZero, we don't believe that any AI detector is perfect.Ask students to produce work in a medium that is difficult to generate, such as powerpoint presentations, visual displays, videos, or audio recordings.Ask students to produce multiple drafts of their work that they can revise as peers or through the educator, to help students understand that assignments are meant to teach a learning process. ![]() Ask students to complete their assignments in class or in an interactive way, and shift lectures to be take-home.Assess students based on a live discussion with their peers, and use peer assessment tools (such as the one provided by our partner, Peerceptiv).Require that students cite real, primary sources of information to back up their specific claims, or ask them to write about recent events.Ask students to critique the default answer given by Chat GPT to your question.Ask students to write about personal experiences and how they relate to the text, or reflect on their learning experience in your class.Create an assessment that cannot be answered by Chat GPT or other AI.For example, in real-life, real-time collaboration, pitching, and debate, how does your class improve their ability to communicate when AI is not available? Help students understand the risks of using AI in their work (to learn more, see this article), and value of learning to express themselves. We believe that the best outcome for educators and students arrives by working together proactively to understand the problem of AI misuse and find strategies that hone in on the human value of education. Our classifier is not trained to identify AI-generated text after it has been heavily modified after generation (although we estimate this is a minority of the uses for AI-generation at the moment).Ĭurrently, our classifier can sometimes flag other machine-generated or highly procedural text as AI-generated, and as such, should be used on more descriptive portions of text. While we train on a highly diverse set of human and AI-generated text, the majority of our dataset is in English prose, written by adults. ![]() The accuracy of our model also increases for text similar in nature to our dataset. As such, the accuracy of the model on the document-level classification will be greater than the accuracy on the paragraph-level, which is greater than the accuracy on the sentence level. The accuracy of our model increases as more text is submitted to the model. Instead, we recommend educators take approaches that give students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding in a controlled environment. While we build more robust models for GPTZero, we recommend that educators take these results as one of many pieces in a holistic assessment of student work. As such, these results should not be used to punish students. In heavily forested and agriculturally viable areas like Indiana, in 1813 prior to statehood, early European settlers were even known to feed their livestock fodder from the unharvested crops left behind when tribes were banished from their homes and farms in late Fall. The remaining ceded lands were made available to homesteaders with a rarely kept promise to farm the lands for five years for $1.25 per acre, and would form the original economic base that fueled further westward expansion by settlers. Large urban areas replaced forests, meadows and gardens. Much of the ceded or seized land became used for the timber industry and homesteading, as well as railroads and large scale farming, dairy farming, and ranching (Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, 2022).
